THE IMAGE OF A GOTHIC CASTLE IN THE SHORT STORY OF O. WILDE ‘THE CANTERVILLE GHOST’

Abstract
The article deals with the image of a castle in the short story ‘The Canterville Ghost’ (1887) by the English writer and poet Oscar Wilde (1854–1900). It notes the influence of the Gothic tradition on the work of Oscar Wilde and the description of the main setting. The article analyzes the Gothic chronotope and the image of a ghost, which is a victim of circumstances in the context of the short story. It pays attention to the Gothic elements of the narrative and the material world of the work. It is established that the castle is a metaphor for old England, as well as the border between the real and the fantastic.
