POLOTSK JESUITS’ PANEGYRIC IN HONOUR OF P.G. LAZAREV AND THE COUNT A.I. ILINSKI: SOCIAL, CULTURAL, AND POLITICAL CONTEXTS

Abstract
The article gives the analysis of the panegyric by Polotsk Jesuits dated January 15, 1800 in honour of Senate inspectors Petr Gavrilovitch Lazarev and the count Avgust Ivanovitch (Józef August) Ilinski in social, cultural, and political frameworks. It inquires into the functions of the French language as a means of social and cultural interactions, and into the situation in which the ceremonial reception of the inspectors took place. The poem is addressed in part to Paul I while the ceremony seems to be just a pretext for praising the Emperor. For this reason, the Russian sovereign’s image, as presented in the panegyric, is carefully reconstructed. As a result, the poem appears to be a striking illustration of the “modernization” process in Belarus at the turn of 18th-19th centuries, and of the Society of Jesus ability to adapt itself to changing social and political contexts.
