CHRISTIAN AND HEATHEN MOTIVES IN THE MEDIEVAL EPIC

Abstract
On the example of the Latin poem of “Waltharius” and German epos “The Song of the Nibelungs” christian and heathen motives of medieval epos are investigated. The works of А.Y. Gurevich, separate articles of M.L. Gasparov and N.A. Ganina, are fixed in basis of theoretical research, sanctified to the analysis of these medieval monuments. Outwardly saturated by christian elements German “The Song of the Nibelungs” on the maintenance is very near to the heroic songs, as in her the special place is spared to prophetic sleeps, predictions, to the mythical exploits and heroic honour. At the same time the poem “Waltharius”, being the Latin epos, serves as the reflection of christian dogmas, such as obedience, humility, godfearingness, faith in immortality of the soul, etc. Presence general plots of poems, conditioned by a single historical background, allows to compare these works. Comparative description of these poems will allow to specify the composition elements of eposes and correlate them with the historical events of the past.
