1812 – 1814 EVENTS IN POLOTSK JESUITES’ POEMS: POETICS AND POLITICS

Abstract
The material for the analysis is provided from panegyrics to Alexander I in Russian and French on two occasions: transformation of Polotsk Jesuite College in Academy (1812) and victory of Russian army in anti-Napoleonic campaign (1814). These writings by anonymous Jesuite poets contribute the achievement of Russian monarchy’s “Greek project” and the mounting of new Christian myth about Russia. Their sources of symbolic imagery are traditional topics and names borrowed from ancient mythology and prophetic books of the Old Testament and revised in the cultural context of late XVIIIth and early XIXth centuries. Parallels are drawn between Jesuite poems and works dated 1810-s by Russian authors, count D.I. Khvostov and baroness V.-J. Krüdener. The following conclusion is made: writings of Polotsk Jesuites belong to political and cultural ideology and to classical rhetoric’s models.
