VLADIMIR SOLOVYOV'S POETIC TRANSLATIONS: STRATEGIES FOR EMBODIMENT OF SOPHIAN IMAGERY

Abstract
This article analyzes the translation work of Vladimir Solovyov (1853–1900) as a significant, but understudied area of the thinker's creative legacy. Based on the review of individual translations, it identifies the specifics of his authorial strategy, driven by his desire to convey significant sacred meanings in literary texts, primarily the revelation of Sophia. Particular attention is given to individual free translations from Plato, G. Heine, Hafiz, A. Mickiewicz, and the stylized cycle "Praises and Supplications to the Blessed Virgin" (Petrarch) as striking examples of Sophian lyricism. It concludes the theurgic nature of these translations as a part of Solovyov's entire poetic work which predetermined new vectors for the development of Russian poetry during the Silver Age.
