Abstract
The relationships between the clearances in the cylinder–piston group and main bearings and the root- mean-square acceleration (RMS) and the root-mean-square value of the acceleration envelope (EnvRMS) were analyzed. The diagnostic parameters were obtained using a vibroacoustic sensor mounted on the wall of the cylinder block of an internal combustion engine. For the cylinder–piston group, the RMS-based model provided the best fit, whereas the EnvRMS-based model performed better for the main bearings. The monotonicity and applicability ranges of the models were assessed. An internal maximum in the relationship between cylinder–piston group clearance and EnvRMS was identified, limiting the applicability of this model. The conditions for indirect clearance monitoring and subsequent residual life assessment were substantiated.
