Abstract
The author reveals the specific role of allusion as one of the most frequently used means of actualization of intertextuality in political communication. Use of authentic texts of public speeches of the American political leaders enabled to analyze this multipurpose and many-sided phenomenon. Allusion as a type of intertextual communication represents deliberate use of a particular element of pretext with the purpose of eliciting proper associations which reveal the connection of two contexts. This leads to enrichment of the new text context as well as to the change of the extent of allusion meaning. The original text is present as much as “behind the text”. Because allusion as one of the means of intertext building represents compressed information that is received from the pretexts it is one of the ways of underlined sense realization.
