Abstract
This article is devoted to the dialogue with the Bible in art and music of Anglo-American modernism on the examples of W. Lewis and B. Britten’s works. In Lewis’s art the dialogue with the Bible is realized by the plot of world’s creation, the plot of women who brought anoitments to Christ’s tomb, the image of God-Сreator and the mythologeme of the promised land. All this is closely related to the shift of cultural focal point from West to East and from monotheism to polytheism. Britten’s operas are made on the plots of flood, three boys in the burning furnace and the prodigal son. The dialogue with the Bible is also manifested through the elements of medieval liturgy. Being the center of the operas, the biblical plots integrate around themselves allusions on different cultures including allusions on the East in wide meaning.
