THE BALLADS OF THE RETURNING DEAD IN THE SWEDISH AND THE ENGLISH-SCOTTISH TRADITION

Abstract
The plots of the folk ballads about returning spirits of the dead are analysed in this article in order to find out similarities and differences in the Swedish and the English-Scottish ballad tradition. Comparative method used for this study is particularly relevant for the study of cross-cultural interactions in today’s globalized world. Furthermore, the usage of this method can help to find out the proofs of the version of heterogeneity of English- Scottish folk ballads, which makes it possible to speak about typically English and typically Scottish ballad plots, as well as about the greater connection of Scottish ballads about the returning dead with the Scandinavian rather than the English tradition.
