THE MAGIC POWER OF RUNES IN SWEDISH FOLK BALLADS

Abstract
The plots of the Swedish folk ballads about the magic power of the runes as the distinctive feature of the Scandinavian ballad tradition is analysed in this article analyzes. The basic theories and approaches to the determination of the origin and meaning of the word “rune” are also mentioned in the article. In addition to the detailed analysis of 3 Swedish ballads a Scottish one is examined as well. Its plot was borrowed from Scandinavia and is very similar, however, the magic power of the runes was replaced by the supernatural properties of plants.
