IMAGES OF WAR IN K. PAUSTOVSKY’S AUTOBIOGRAPHICAL BOOK ‘RESTLESS YOUTH’

Abstract
This article examines some episodes from K. Paustovsky’s autobiographical book, ‘Restless Youth’, which recreate the narrator’s life in the present-day Belarusian territories during the First World War. Based on the juxtaposition of a bygone past, with its cultural and historical imperatives, and a brutal modernity that systematically destroys material values, axiological dominants, and the significance of human existence as such, these fragments speak of a peculiar temporal rupture, the consequences of which are experienced by the local multinational population before the narrator’s very eyes. The crisis-ridden nature of the era under consideration compels the author to rethink the image of a refugee, portrayed not so much as an innocent martyr of war, but as one of the bearers of its destructive potential.
