FRANCESCO PETRARCA AS A “WITNESS” IN THE POLEMICAL RELIGIOUS LITERATURE OF THE GRAND DUCHY OF LITHUANIA IN THE LATE 16TH – EARLY 17TH CENTURIES

Abstract
The article is devoted to the reception of Francesco Petrarca’s heritage by the polemical religious literature of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the late 16th – early 17th centuries. It has been established that Klirik Ostrozhskij and Meletij Smotrickij, while exposing the vices of the Catholic Church in their works and accusing the Papal Court of numerous sins, called upon the Italian writer as a witness: to support their claims, they cited excerpts from the «Epistolae sine nomine», the Latin translation of the 138th sonnet “Fons aerumnarum, domus irae, plena furoris…” (“Fontana di dolore, albergo d’ira…”). The research suggests that in most cases quotations from F. Petrarca found their way into the works of the writers-polemicists of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania not directly from the editions of his literary heritage, but through “intermediary sources” – the works of Western European Protestants.
