Abstract
The article considers typical deviations from printed or written texts in authentic acts of reading aloud, performed in four cultures: American, Belarusian, English and Russian. The paper gives a list of such deviations and analyzes two of them, inserts or introductions into the text of some fragments which have never been part of it and omission of the segments which belong to the text. The article also establishes frequency of the deviations and studies them from Gender perspective. Inserts in female reading turned out to be three dimensional: they are either signals of the emotional state of the readers or of their interpretation of the meaning of the text. They can also be markers of their appeal to the listener. This variety of reading aloud can be presented with the help of the model ‘text, the listener and the reader of the text’. In male reading inserts are mainly signals of their thinking over the meaning of the units in the text. This type of reading out can be best represented through another model: ‘text and me, the reading subject’.
