Abstract

At various times scientists investigating the fiction devoted to the First World War dealt with the category of ‘lost generation’. The term was traditionally used to characterize R. Aldington’s, E.M. Remarque’s and E. Hemingway’s works. Special attention was given to the novel ‘Fiesta’ by the American writer. There the phrase ‘lost generation’ was used for the first time. Later the critics all over the world started to perceive E. Hemingway’s work like an encyclopedia dealing with the disillusioned war veterans’ existence. Reading the book superficially the researchers did not notice that for the writer the ‘lost’ protagonists are not the indiscrete mass.‘Lost generation’ in the article is studied in an integral way: by the example of the three major groups of characters. Similarities and differences in their value system are pointed out. It is emphasized that E. Hemingway as well as the main character does not completely belong to the ‘lost generation’.
