THE ROLE OF THE IRRATIONAL IN J. W. GOETHE’S WORKS (BASED ON THE NOVEL WILHELM MEISTER’S APPRENTICESHIP AND THE TALES OF THE GERMAN REFUGEES NOVELLAE CYCLE)

Abstract
The article dwells on the comparison of the role of the mysterious incidents in the Wilhelm Meister’s Apprenticeship and the Tales of German Refugees by J.W. Goethe. Enigmatic events within the novella genre are the means of revelation of the true nature of a person, hidden behind the mask of the everyday developments. Incident itself looses its substantive value and is regarded only as a background for further self-actualization, which can be achieved only by means of the mind-driven practice. The moral approach of the Tower Society members is based on the harmonious coordination of the human individuality with the regulating mind, and is considered to be the generic model of personal self-perfection. The irrational elements of the novel provide the possibility to get the characters out of the state of overconcentration on the self and its desires, and to quit the realm of the subjective in order to take part in the social life.
