FUNCTIONAL PROPERTIES OF COORDINATOR NI EN POTENTIA IN OLD AND MIDDLE FRENCH

Abstract
The article is devoted to the identification of the functional properties of the coordinator ni in the Old and Middle French. It has been established that, despite its low usage, the union demonstrates its connecting properties in various contexts, forming units of different syntactic complexity. It was revealed that the functioning of the modern single coordinator ni and the double coordinator ni… ni… when connecting parts of a simple or complex sentence in a negative context has historical prerequisites. Since the period of the Old and Middle French language, some uses of the coordinator do not undergo significant changes, some uses are modified. At the same time, the use of the coordinator can be classified as abnormal for the modern French language, remaining as archaic, or ready to disappear completely in the future.
