Abstract
Social media addiction is highly prevalent among Generation Z members. For young mans and girls, statistically significant relationships were found for dependence on social networks: negative – with age, assertiveness, aggressiveness and mood, and positive – with impulsivity, sleep problems and dependence on a smartphone. In the process of studying at a university, there is a gradual decrease in the degree of dependence on social networks. The established negative correlation of dependence on social networks with assertiveness and a positive correlation with impulsiveness and dependence on smartphones confirm in the Belarusian society similar connections previously identified in foreign studies. No direct impact of social media addiction on academic performance was found, but exposure to manipulation and impulsivity associated with smartphone addiction was negatively impacted on academic performance. The results obtained indicate the negative impact of smartphone addiction on the psychological state of the victims of this addiction.
