THE PECULIARITIES OF THE CONVEYANCE OF AMBIGUITY OF “THE POETIC EDDA” IN THE RUSSIAN, ENGLISH AND BELARUSIAN TRANSLATION

Abstract

The article analyzes the peculiarities of the conveyance of the word game based on ambiguity in the translation of the ancient Icelandic collection of the first half of the XIII century “The Prose Edda” into Russian, English and Belarusian. Much attention is paid to translation techniques and the analysis of their conformity to the author’s intention, the logic of the story and the preservation of the literary text. The issue of the correspondence of existing translations into the above-mentioned languages is considered in detail, respectively the article is accompanied by the quotations in Old Icelandic, English, Russian and Belarusian. During the comparison the drawbacks of the existing translations of “The Prose Edda” into Russian and English are consistently analyzed, and the solution of similar problematic issues in the Belarusian translation of the work is demonstrated. In this regard, it is believed that the method of literary adaptation of the text is the most optimal for the preservation of the author’s intention, content and artistic value.
